Artist's Biography & Statement
"Although my “career” for over 35 years involved forecasting New England’s crazy weather, I have pursued an avocation which also derives much of its energy from the awesome power of nature. Through drawing, painting, printmaking and photography, I attempt to capture in two-dimensional imagery some semblance of the many wondrous creations that nature lays out before us. These may be images of New Hampshire’s majestic White Mountains, the timeless movement of streams or the sea, or the minutest detail of a petunia or a dandelion."
"While living and working in the Boston area and later in “retirement” on Cape Cod, I spent as much time as possible taking classes and workshops in most of the creative arts. At the DeCordova Museum School in Lincoln, MA, I studied portrait and figure drawing and painting with Dudty Fletcher, a marvelous woman who taught me valuable lessons about life as well as art. I also studied wax and clay sculpture with Master Sculptor Peter Abate, and spent many hours with other great teachers over many years at the DeCordova. On Cape Cod, I studied at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham and the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown under such nationally known artists as Author – Painter Lois Griffel, Pastel Painter John DiMestico, and Copley Master Printmaker Joyce Zavorskas."
"My extreme close-up photography has made it possible for me to have a much better understanding of abstract imagery, since all my photographs are based on reality yet reveal some of nature’s most beautifully complex and sometimes mystifying designs. These photographs are the inspiration for a body of work which I call “Abstractions from Nature” and are available the Ammonoosuc Artists Gallery in Littleton."
"Shortly after moving to the North Country in 2004, I opened my “North-of-the Notch” Studio overlooking the beautiful Ammonoosuc River at the Tannery Marketplace in Littleton. At the studio, my main focus is painting and printmaking. My 20 foot “painting wall” permits me to have several large canvases under way simultaneously. My antique Wright Etching Press is capable of producing original prints such as monotypes and monoprints up to 24” by 48.” I hope you will find something in my paintings, prints and photographs that resonates with you. Please drop in and say “hello” when you visit the Gallery."
"I also accept commissions (oil or pastel paintings) for portrait or landscape work. Please contact me by email at NotchArts@verizon.net or call the Gallery at 603-444-6266 to set up an appointment."
